What to Do If You’re Pregnant and New in Malta

If you’ve just discovered you’re pregnant and you’re not sure what to do next — you’re not alone. We’re here to help every step of the way, no matter where you come from.

Step 1

Visit a Private Gynecologist to Confirm the Pregnancy

Make an appointment with a private gynecologist. The doctor will do a first visit: ultrasound, blood tests, discussion. If you need help choosing a doctor, call our helpline. We can share trusted names.

Step 2

Ask for a Referral to Mater Dei Hospital

After your private doctor confirms the pregnancy, ask them to refer you to Mater Dei Hospital. This referral starts your public‐hospital care process.

Step 3

You’ll Receive Your First Appointment by Mail

Mater Dei will send you an appointment letter in the mail. That letter will include date, time, and where to go inside the hospital.

Step 4

Prepare What You’ll Need Before the Baby Arrives

At your first hospital visit, they will give you a checklist of items to have ready. This may include baby clothing, crib, car seat, etc. If you can’t afford everything, contact us — we can help with what we have.

Step 5

Know the Costs

Birthing at Mater Dei is not free for everyone. If you haven’t lived and worked in Malta for over a year, you may need to pay for birthing.

Step 6

You Can Always Call Us for Help or Questions

Any time — at any point in the process — you can call our helpline. We can help with appointments, interpreting, referrals, material need or emotional support.
